Title contender Kanaan leads California practice

Honda-powered Tony Kanaan led the opening practice sessions for Sunday's California Indy 400, with fellow Honda driver and rookie points leader Roger Yasukawa just behind as race preparations began at California Speedway. Kanaan, already a race winner this year at Phoenix, come into the weekend just 14 points behind Helio Castroneves in the battle for the IndyCar Series championship.

A total of five Honda drivers posted top-ten speeds in Friday's practice sessions. Dan Wheldon ran sixth fastest today in his Andretti Green entry as he continues to battle Yasukawa for Rookie of the Year honors, followed by Team Rahal's Kenny Brack in eighth.

Bryan Herta escaped injury when a mechanical failure led to a crash in the morning practice session, and still managed to post the ninth-fastest speed of the day. Greg Ray, driving a brand new Access Motorsports chassis after a crash two weeks ago at Chicagoland Speedway, ran 20th overall as driver and team continued to sort out the replacement machine.

Tony Kanaan (#11 Seven-11 Andretti Green Racing Honda) fastest today:

"I bet everyone did [their fastest] lap time with a tow; I just got a better one. We worked a lot on race setup today, so I wasn't concerned about speed, but the speed was still there. But here at California Speedway, it doesn't matter where you qualify; this is going to be a tight race. It doesn't matter where you start. Tomorrow, instead of working on a qualifying program, we'll continue to concentrate on our race setup and then see what happens on Sunday."
