Fontana, CA (October 1, 2004) Red Bull Cheever Racing drivers lapped the 2-mile D-shaped oval at California Speedway under sunny skies and warm temperatures in preparation for the Toyota Indy 400.

Menifee, California native Alex Barron in the No. 51 Dallara/Chevy/Firestone was 13th out of 22 in the combined practice session results with a 214.565mph fast lap.

"We ran in the slower practice group all day, but we were very quick in that group and able to work on a variety of different things for race setup," Barron explained. "We wanted to work on running in traffic with some other teams, so we took our turn running up front and towing other cars around the track. Unfortunately, when it was time for other teams to take their turn leading, they went into the pits and we didn't have the same opportunity. Overall though, we had a smooth practice day and are just looking for a way to get some more speed out of the car."

The No. 52 Chevy-powered Dallara piloted by Ed Carpenter was not far off his teammate's pace with a quick lap of 213.285mph, but the 23-year old rookie was still looking for more.

"It wasn't the greatest day in terms of practice times," Carpenter said. "We could have been a little quicker, but we learned some small things during both practice sessions. By starting out doing things the wrong way, we were able to fix our problems and improve the car. We're now back where we need to be for tomorrow, so hopefully we'll make more progress and be all set for the race on Sunday."

California Speedway is the site of the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series season finale for the 2005 schedule. Texas Motor Speedway, which formerly held two IndyCar races including the season ending event, will now host only one IndyCar Series event.

The checkered flag for the Toyota Indy 400, race 15 of 16 on the IRL IndyCar Series schedule, falls on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. (EDT). The race will be broadcast live on ESPN and also on the IMS Radio Network.
