INDIANAPOLIS, July 28, 2001 - Walker Racing driver Sarah Fisher returned to the racetrack this past Wednesday where she made history in Aug. 2000. Sarah placed third at Kentucky Speedway a year ago, and became the youngest woman to stand on a podium in Indy car history in the process.
Sarah and the Walker Racing team participated in a one-day private test on Wednesday. She completed a total of 168 laps in the #15 Walker Racing/Kroger Special with a best time of 25.28 sec., 213.6 mph during the session before rain showers ended their day early.
"This test was a learning experience for us and helped us a lot in getting us back on track as a team," Sarah said. "We learned quite a bit that will help us when we go back. This is my favorite track to run on, I really like the geometry of it, and I'm looking forward to running there in a couple of weeks time."
Owner Derrick Walker and CART Team Manager Rob Edwards were on-hand at Kentucky to watch the IRL team in action.
"We've struggled over the last few races to understand the Dallara," said Derrick. "And we feel we've made some gains here at Kentucky to rectify that. We took some steps as a team in the right direction today as well, with Tim Bumps joining Walker Racing as program manager. He has a strong background and has worked for a number of good teams over the years."
Derrick and Tim worked together in the past from 1985 through 1988. Derrick was Vice President of Operations at Penske Racing at the time and hired Bumps to work for the team.
The Walker Racing IRL team will continue their testing schedule at Gateway International Raceway in St. Louis on July 31. Open -wheel standout Casey Mears will join Sarah and the team for Tuesday's test session. Casey most recently tested for the Walker Racing CART team at Mid-Ohio Sports Complex in July.
"The St. Louis test is part of our long-range plan to include Casey into the Walker Racing team in the future," said Derrick.
Sarah and the team will test at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, IL. on Aug. 2, and will return to racing action on Aug. 12 at Kentucky Speedway.
