INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 3 2001 - Walker Racing driver Sarah Fisher dodged the raindrops and ran a fast lap of 209.957 mph., 25.7 seconds, on the brand-new 1.5-mile Chicagoland Speedway on Thursday. The teams participating in the IRL's open test that day had their track time limited to three hours due to heavy rainstorms in the Chicago area, but Sarah was able to complete a total of 139 laps in the #15 Walker Racing/Kroger Special/Oldsmobile/ Dallara/Firestone car in preparation for the Delphi Indy 300 on Sept. 2.
"The track is really nice and smooth," said Sarah. "The banking here is very well suited for the way I drive an Indy car. The rain in the morning held us up and I was worried that we wouldn't be able to run at all, but the track personnel got the surface dry very quickly. It's amazing to see the changes this track has been through in just a year. Derrick and I were in Joliet last summer for a luncheon and we drove by then when it was under construction and it was just a big pile of dirt. It's a beautiful place now and is going to be a great track to drive on and for the fans to see an exciting race."
"This was a good test for us, engineering-wise and team-wise." said team manager Rob Edwards. "We concentrated on working through mechanical rather than aerodynamic changes to the car and we got some good data we will be able to use for the race. The three test sessions that we've completed in the past week have really helped to get our team back on track, and we're headed in the right direction to Kentucky."
The Indy Racing League returns to action on Aug. 12 at Kentucky Motor Speedway. The Belterra Casino 300 race will be broadcast live on ABC at 1:30 p.m. (ET).
