Indy Racing Northern Light Series
Delphi Indy 300 at Chicagoland Speedway, Joliet, Ill.
August 31-September 2, 2001
Race distance: 200 laps, 300 miles.
Firestone tires supplied this weekend: almost 900 (based on 8 sets per car for 26 cars). Tire staggers available: 1 (approximately 0.45 inches). Past Firestone winners at Chicagoland: inaugural race. New frontiers, chapter six: Chicagoland Speedway marks the sixth and final new track on the 2001 Indy Racing Northern Light Series schedule. The first five new venues have seen four different winners (Sam Hornish Jr. at Homestead, Buddy Lazier at Richmond and Nashville, Eddie Cheever at Kansas and Al Unser Jr. at Gateway).
Al Speyer, Bridgestone/Firestone Motorsports Director, on the tire selection for Chicagoland: "The tire choice for this weekend is the result of the Firestone engineers again listening and responding to driver requests, in our ongoing effort to continue being the best tire provider the IRL has ever had. We originally planned on bringing the same compound and construction tire that was used this season at Atlanta, Indianapolis and Texas. However, earlier this summer at a Chicagoland Speedway test, we ran that original specification tire as well as one that featured a more durable right-side compound. The drivers who compared the two specs - Eddie Cheever was among the most vocal - favored using the more durable spec, feeling it gave them the same excellent performance and control but for even longer periods. We utilized this newer spec three weekends ago at Kentucky Speedway, where there were concerns going in about track grip. The Firehawk racing radials performed flawlessly that weekend, adding to the excitement of what turned out to be one of the more thrilling races of the year. As the season winds down to the final two races and the championship battle rages on, we're confident yet again that the Firestone tires will provide the platform for another sensational race at this sparkling new facility. Firestone is pleased and proud to be a part of the inaugural IRL event at Chicagoland Speedway."
FIRESTONE LEADER AT HALFWAY AWARD:
Greg Ray continues to lead the season standings in the Firestone "Leader at Halfway Award" competition. Ray has been the race leader at the midway mark of four Indy Racing Northern Light Series events this year, earning a total of $50,000 in contingency money ($20,000 for the honor at Indianapolis, $10,000 each for Phoenix, Atlanta and Texas I). Sam Hornish Jr. has collected the halfway leader award three times (Homestead, Pikes Peak and Nashville), while Buddy Lazier (Richmond), Eddie Cheever Jr. (Kansas), Scott Sharp (Kentucky) and Al Unser Jr. (Gateway) have taken home the $10,000 one time each. Firestone Racing will present another $10,000 to the Delphi Indy 300 leader at the completion of lap 100.
