INDIANAPOLIS, Monday, July 7, 2003 -- IRL IndyCar Series driver Felipe Giaffone is in good condition following surgery on his right leg today at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after suffering a fracture in an accident during the Kansas Indy 300 on July 6 at Kansas Speedway, said Dr. Henry Bock, IRL director of medical services.

Giaffone also suffered a fractured pelvis during the accident.

The surgery, performed by Dr. Kevin Scheid, orthopedic surgeon at Orthopedics Indianapolis, lasted approximately three hours and went exceptionally well, said Bock. He anticipates Giaffone to remain at Methodist Hospital through the end of the week.

"The surgery went extremely well," said Bock. "Once we see how the rest of the week goes, as well as the ensuing rehabilitation period, then we can make some judgment as to how long until Felipe returns to the race car."

Brazilian native Giaffone and Dan Wheldon collided and crashed in Turn 2 on Lap 56 while battling for position. Giaffone, who started fifth, was credited with 22nd place in the No. 21 Hollywood Mo Nunn Racing Panoz G Force/Toyota/Firestone.

Following the incident, Giaffone was admitted to Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kans., where he remained under observation Sunday night. He was transferred to Methodist Hospital Monday morning.

Further updates on Giaffone's condition will be provided when available.
