FORT WORTH-DALLAS (Sept. 2, 1998) - With the Lone Star 500 race week just around the corner, fans will find there are a number of ways to get closer to the action at Texas Motor Speedway.

TAKE A RIDE FOR CHARITY - Anyone who's ever wondered what it was like to go 170 mph around the 1.5-mile speedway will have the chance to find out - and help children at the same time. The Speedway Children's Charities (SCC) has teamed up with local driving school Team Texas to host a special "Ride and Drive" fundraising program at the speedway on Friday, Sept. 11. Each ride, which is three laps in an actual Winston Cup car, is $90 and every penny will go to help local charities which benefit children. "We are so grateful to Team Texas for donating their time and efforts to this program to help the kids," said Rusty Vaughn, vice president of the Texas Chapter of SCC. "We were amazed at how quickly the driving programs filled up, but we do still have a limited number of rides left, so folks can sign up, take a ride and help the kids at the same time." The rides will begin at 4 p.m. in the speedway infield. For more information, contact Rusty Vaughn at (972) 570-4700.

HIT THE PITS - Fans may purchase "cold pit" passes for the Lone Star 500 weekend. The pass will allow access to the pit and garage area until 30 minutes prior to the start of the race. Each person, who must be 18 years of age to enter the pits, must have a race ticket to purchase the cold pit pass. The passes are $75 each and will be on sale at Gate 5 of the speedway Friday, Sept. 18,

8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 20, 8 a.m. until noon.

SIGN HERE, PLEASE - Fans who want to get "up close and personal" to their favorite driver will have the opportunity on Friday, Sept. 18. At the conclusion of the Dallas Morning News Pole Day qualifying, fans will be allowed to cross over from the grandstands into the infield for a special autograph session in the Pep Boys Indy Racing League garage. In addition to meeting drivers from the IRL and ARCA series, fans will also get a chance to see the Indy cars in the garage area. The Dallas Morning News is producing a special autograph card which will be available to fans at the speedway.
