The Excite@Home Indy Race Team made steady progress throughout the first day of practice for the Vegas Indy 300, with Eddie Cheever Jr. touring the 1.5-mile Las Vegas oval in 26.291 seconds for a top speed of 205.393mph. Cheever and his crew worked on developing a race set-up for the #51 Excite@Home Indy Race Car, as well as determining how the Infiniti-powered machine would handle in traffic. Cheever, the 1998 Indianapolis 500 Champion, posted his best time in the heat of the day, emerging third in the session and ninth overall, a mere 0.207 seconds behind practice leader Scott Sharp.

Cheever: "We're working on our race set-up, and we were able to try a lot of things today. The hardest thing is adjusting to how the track has changed since we tested here in February. Las Vegas is a very difficult oval because of the minimal banking, and you really have to make the car work more. Tires play a critical role, and we're studying every set of Firestones that we use.

We're also trying to make the #51 Excite@Home Indy Race Car work in traffic, which is always a challenge here. This circuit is a diabolical place in traffic. I've been antagonizing every guy out there today - not because I want to bother them, but because I want to see how the car behaves in traffic. I'd say that Vegas and Indianapolis are the toughest tracks in traffic, which is another reason this race is great preparation for the Indy 500."
