Cheever's 4 x 4 finish at the Peak Eddie Cheever holds off the competition to finish fourth And recaptures fourth position in the Points Drive

Fountain, Colorado - Eddie Cheever drove home his #51 Children's Beverage Group/ Team Cheever Dallara/Goodyear/Infiniti to a fourth place finish at today's Radisson 200 at Pikes Peak International Raceway fending his backside at the checkered flag from an attempted pass by Coloradian Buddy Lazier. "Infiniti did a superb job. We had an engine that could have won today," spoke a disappointed Cheever. "When that yellow came out after our first stop, it put us out of sync and we spent the rest of the day fighting to stay ahead of the leaders. Infiniti should feel very proud of their engine. We let them down." Cheever started the race from the sixth row and eleventh position. When the green flag dropped Cheever moved his way up the pack and was running third when he took his first stop. Nine laps later, a yellow was thrown. As the leaders drove down pit lane for their stop, Cheever dropped a lap down and back to eleventh place. "That yellow really cost us the race in my opinion," said Cheever. "Then, losing radio contact with the crew about midpoint, I could not communicate the small adjustments I needed to make to the car. Making up a lap with no radio is not an easy feat." But make up a lap, he did. From lap 84 to lap 200, Cheever fought his way to stay ahead of the leaders. With ten laps to go, having made his lap back, Cheever honed in on third place runner Davey Hamilton, with fifth place Buddy Lazier breathing down his neck. With a final push, Cheever crossed the finish line just nine seconds from a third place finish and with lazier just a split second off his tail. "If I had even thought of lifting, Lazier would have passed me," said Cheever. "Some of my best races have been when I've been up against Buddy. It's like racing against a bulldog. He's a formidable foe, but he couldn't get by us today." Cheever moves to fourth in the Pep Boys Indy Racing League point drive for the Championship title. Round six of the 1999 Pep Boys Indy Racing League series is at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday night, July 17th at 7:30pm EDT. "Points are for sissies," joked the former Indy 500 winner, then seriously . "Winning races wins Championships. I'm here to win races. Bring on Atlanta."
