Conseco/A.J. Foyt Driver Greg Ray Runs as High as Third In Pep Boys 400k at Dover Downs
DOVER, Del: July 19, 1998 - In his first race with Conseco/A.J. Foyt Racing, Greg Ray was a favorite to finish on the podium in the Pep Boys 400k at Dover Downs until an accident involving another car took him out of the race prematurely.
Starting from seventh position, Ray was running in the top five by lap 22 of the race. After pit stops on laps 33 and 82, Ray passed Eddie Cheever on lap 87 to take fourth place.
On lap 104 of the 248-lap race, Ray moved up to third place when he passed Davey Hamilton with Cheever right behind him. Then the battle between the pair went sour when Cheever attempted to pass Ray on the outside line of the track. The two cars collided at the exit of turn two taking them both out of the race.
"Eddie obviously got a little draft on me and was going around the high side," said Ray. "My spotter said 'high' so I went down as low as I could go. I probably all but touched the apron. I remember when he hit me. He still had a lot of room on the outside. He just didn't give me any room. If that would have been the last lap, I could probably live with this. But we weren't even half way. It was uncalled for."
Greg Ray joined Conseco/A.J. Foyt Racing this weekend to drive the No. 11 car in the absence of Billy Boat. Boat was injured three weeks ago in an accident at New Hampshire International Speedway. "It's disappointing," said Ray. "We had a really good car. I wanted to do the best job I could for Billy, Conseco and A.J. Foyt, and help my career along as well. These kind of things don't help anybody." Greg Ray finished 15th in the final race results and posted the fastest race lap at 183.468mph. He earned enough points to move up to 14th in the driver's championship standings. The Conseco/A.J. Foyt racing entry ranks sixth in the team point standings . The next event on the schedule for Greg Ray and the Conseco/Foyt crew is the VisionAire 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C. on evening of Saturday, July 25.
