Dover's "Monster Mile" Ends Cheever's Hopes Early Cheever's fast dash from 19th to 8th place ends in a collision on Lap 57

Dover, Delaware - Eddie Cheever experienced the worst of Dover's "Monster Mile" today when, on Lap 57, trying to pass Robby Unser and Scott Harrington, his # 51 Children's Beverage Group Dallara/Goodyear/Infiniti was tapped from behind. In the midst of a marvelous run up the grid, Cheever's hopes of climbing to the top of the Championship spun helplessly hard into the wall off Turn Two.

"It's very disappointing. We had a great car this weekend," said Cheever who had worked his way from 19th to 8th in the short 57-lap run. "We were fast all weekend long, and though we had a few problems in Qualifying, we were well on our way through the grid and ready to settle down to win this race."

"Dover is an impossible place to pass," continued Cheever. "They can really shut you down out there. I thought I had the run on Robby's outside, but it got tight and I got hit me from behind. It's a pity."

With the MBNA Mid-Atlantic 200 result, Cheever now sits sixth in the drive for the 1999 Championship Pep Boys Indy Racing League title, just 35 points out from leader Scott Goodyear.

"Mathematically, the Championship is still possible," said Cheever of season. "It will be very difficult, but this team does its best work when the odds are against us."

The Pep Boys Indy Racing League returns to Pikes Peak International Raceway on Sunday, August 29th for round 8 of the 10-race series. The Colorado 200 race will be televised on Fox Sports Net with the PPG Pole Qualifier airing live on Speedvision on Saturday, August 28th.

Primary sponsorship of Team Cheever comes from The Children's Beverage Group. The Children's Beverage Group (TCBG) is the designer of the RIP-IT SIP-IT(tm) straw-in-the-pouch drinking system that began distribution nationwide in 1997.
