Meira Caught Up In Five-Car Pile-up In Turn One; Finishes 15th
DETROIT, Mich. (September 2, 2007) -- Super Aguri Panther Racing driver Kosuke Matsuura did a masterful job avoiding the carnage that was the Detroit Indy Grand Prix Sunday at the Raceway at Belle Isle to claim his second Top Five finish of the 2007 season.
Veteran Panther racer Vitor Meira finished in 15th position after getting caught up in a five-car incident in Turn One.
Matsuura, who started back in 14th position, avoided several multiple-car incidents on Sunday, including a three-car melee on the final lap of the event. Despite falling a lap down following the first round of pit stops, Kosuke stayed focused and continued to move up the field as more competitors fell out of the event.
His result is second only to a fourth-place finish earlier this season at Michigan International Raceway and was his best road course result of the season. Kosuke has now collected five Top Ten finishes this season.
Meira qualified tenth and had moved into ninth position after his first pit stop on Lap 25. Then, as he took the restart on Lap 32, Sarah Fisher turned down into Sam Hornish Jr. and, simultaneously, Danica Patrick and Darren Manning made contact. Meira tried to avoid the accident by driving high, but Fisher's car slid into the tires in front of him and his No. 4 car sustained enough damage to conclude the race.
The IndyCar Series will travel to Chicagoland Speedway next Sunday for the final race of the 2007 season. The race will be broadcast live on ABC at 4 p.m. with additional coverage provided by the IMS Radio Network and XM Satellite Radio channels 144 and 145.
"As soon as I saw it, I couldn't go anywhere. On the restart I was going into turn one and I saw the contact between Sam (Hornish) and Sarah (Fisher). Buddy (Rice) was behind me and Darren (Manning) had a bad start. While I was right underneath him, he touched Danica and (I) almost crashed into him. There was nowhere to go. I tried to go to the side but Sarah was coming backwards. It's a shame for the Delphi crew, we can't buy a break."
"The car balance wasn't bad but i just couldn't get enough grip so it was a tough race. I knew it would be a tough race so i concentrated making sure I finished. I was lucky at the end to not get involved in any accidents and was able to finish at the 5th position. The Panasonic guys really deserved it. I hope i will be able to finish in good position in Chicagoland as well."
