MADISON, ILL -- Gil de Ferran earned his second Indy Racing League career victory after leading 81 of the 200 laps at Gateway International Raceway.

De Ferran, who started from the pole, led four times, taking the lead for good on lap 184. After squeezing passed his teammate on the front straightaway, de Ferran crossed the finish line 2.1024 seconds ahead of Helio Castroneves.

De Ferran's first IRL win came at Pikes Peak in June, where he also started from the pole.

With their one-two finish today, Marlboro Team Penske drivers are now atop the championship point standings with Castroneves leading de Ferran by one point.

Faced with intense traffic, including many slower cars, de Ferran drove like a man possessed, slicing his way passed slower cars, and ultimately, his teammate for the victory.

"It was a tough race," said De Ferran. "Certainly one of the hardest races I have driven."

Today's performance by de Ferran and Castroneves marked the third time the team has finished first and second this season. Previous one-two finishes came at Pikes Peak and Phoenix.

Alex Barron finished third after leading 29 laps late in the race. At one point, Barron enjoyed a five lead, which vanished when the caution flag was shown on lap 145.

Buddy Rice and Sam Hornish Jr. rounded out the top five.
