Target Team wraps up final Indy 500 Open Test
Indianapolis, Indiana, April 29th, 2004 -- Target Chip Ganassi Racing participated in the final two day open test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in advance of a full month of preparations in May for the 88th running of the Indianapolis 500. Both team drivers Scott Dixon and Darren Manning took part in the test and were relatively pleased with what the team was able to accomplish with the G Force / Toyota.
"It was a good test for us overall," said Scott Dixon, who posted a fast lap of 219.985 mph on day two of the test, finishing 3rd fastest overall. "The windy conditions mixed things up a bit for everyone but we're happy with what we got done. I posted a 219.985 with a bit of a tow on Thursday morning but had a 219.5 running by myself. The track will only get faster throughout the month but the IRL has done a good job in establishing guidelines and making changes to slow things down and still make the car a challenge to drive. My comfort level is good and I feel a lot better about heading into the month of May than I did last year. Having been through it once, I know what to expect this year and that makes it easier. Now we have a few weeks to prepare and to embrace the event."
Darren Manning posted a fast lap of 218.319 mph on the first day of the test but saw his effort cut short on the second day when he tested the safer barrier with a three-quarter spin that caused some damage the No. 10 car.
"I was getting up to speed just a bit too quickly and too soon in the session. The car was pretty loose and I was in the process of making some adjustments. I was on my first run, about 5 laps in and half way through turn, when the wind caught the back of the car and it snapped loose. I tried to correct but just wasn't quick enough and hit the wall backwards, damaging the left side of the car. It's disappointing to miss out on a full day of testing but I'm pretty happy with the numbers we put up on the first day. I ran a 218.319 running on my own while the others used the tow. We've got a lot of work planned over the next few weeks and I'm feeling confident about the course we're on."
