Joliet, IL (September 10, 2004) Practice for Sunday's Delphi Indy 300 kicked off at Chicagoland Speedway with 22 IndyCars burning rubber on the 1.5-mile speedway.
Red Bull Cheever Racing's Alex Barron was quick and consistent through both the morning and afternoon sessions topping off the day with a 213.536 mph fast lap.
"We worked mostly on race setup today and made three big changes to the car that made the balance a lot better in the second session," Barron said of his 15th quickest time in the combined practice session results. "We tried to run in traffic all day, but in the second practice people were moving around on the track quite a bit, so we ended our day early because we were almost taken out twice."
Teammate Ed Carpenter's No. 52 crew lost power in the pit stand during the morning session, which caused a break in Carpenter's session until the telemetry could be regained.
"We lost a little bit of time during the morning session because of a power problem, but made up for it with our runs in the afternoon," Carpenter said. "I had a really good race car for both sessions today, so I'm happy with how we're starting our weekend off. We made some good changes to the car during the second session and had an even better car than in the morning."
Despite this morning's minor setback, the 23-year old Indianapolis resident turned a fast lap of 213.024mph, earning him the 19th quickest overall time.
"It's hard to tell today where you stand compared to the other cars on track because everyone is drafting, so you don't really know the speeds they're able to run" Carpenter said. "Tomorrow morning we'll get out there and see how fast we can go during practice to get ready for qualifying in the afternoon."
Chicagoland Speedway is the home of firsts for both Barron and Carpenter. In 2003, while Barron ran his first race for Red Bull Cheever Racing, Carpenter was driving in his first-ever IRL IndyCar Series race.
Qualifying for the Delphi Indy 300 begins tomorrow at 12p.m. (EDT).
