The CURB/Agajanian/Boat Indy Racing team has something to prove. With a frustrating season about to come to an end, the team wants to prove that they are still in contention to visit Victory Circle in 2002. And if the results of the first day of practice are any indication, the team has made their point.
Billy Boat finished the first day of practice for the Delphi Indy 300 at the Chicagoland Speedway as the fourth fastest driver with a fast lap of 222.866mph in 24.5529 seconds. Considering that the team did not test at the track and had only limited track time, the results are satisfying.
"Right out of the box, the CURB Records team is pretty happy," says Billy Boat,"we've got a well-balanced racecar, we've got good speed. Darrell and the whole crew did a great job of being prepared. We rolled off the trailer and with really no track time and without testing here at all, the car is good. Speed is important here, but you also have to have a good handling car in traffic, so we're going to focus on that a lot."
The top two spots for the day went to Red Bull Team Cheever teammates, Eddie Cheever, Jr. and Buddy Rice. Sam Hornish, Jr. was third quick for the day.
"We feel like our car will be competitive in qualifying," summed up Boat at the end of the day. "We'll just have to wait and see what everyone else has but right now we feel pretty good."
Qualifying begins at 10:00am tomorrow, Saturday, September 7th, following a morning practice session. The Delphi Indy 300 takes place at 1:00pm EDT on Sunday, September 8 and will air live on ABC. As always, live timing and scoring of all on-track activity can be found on www.indyracing.com.
