Herta Takes Ninth Spot in Qualifying In XM Satellite Radio Car

JOLIET, Ill. (Sept. 11, 2004) - XM Satellite Radio driver Bryan Herta posted a best lap of 212.983 miles per hour (25.6922 seconds) today to capture the ninth starting position for tomorrow's running of the Delphi Indy 300 at Chicagoland Speedway.

Herta, who enters tomorrow's event ranked 10th in the Indy Racing League® (IRL) IndyCar® Series standings with 295 points, is only one point behind ninth-place driver Darren Manning and just 19 points from the sixth spot currently held by Sam Hornish Jr. He was one of four Andretti Green Racing drivers to qualify in the top- nine positions on the day. With the ninth-place start, Herta will begin in the top 10 for the tenth time during the 2004 season.

Herta finished third at Chicagoland in 2003 in the fourth-closest finish in IRL IndyCar Series history. The 2002 event at Chicagoland Speedway produced the closest finish in IndyCar Series history.

Helio Castroneves will start from the pole Sunday with a fast lap of 214.759 miles per hour (25.4979 seconds), followed by Tony Kanaan, who came in at 214.030 miles per hour (25.5665 seconds). Buddy Rice qualified third with a speed of 213.843 miles per hour (25.5889 seconds), followed by Andretti Green Racing drivers Dario Franchitti and Dan Wheldon, who ran speeds of 213.644 miles per hour (25.6127 seconds) and 213.130 miles per hour (25.6745 seconds), respectively.

The Delphi Indy 300 - the 14th race of the 2004 IndyCar Series season - is set to go green Sunday at 1:55 (EDT) with ABC Sports providing live coverage beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Bryan Herta, #7 XM Satellite Radio Dallara/Honda/Firestone:

"I wish we would have had a little more in the XM Satellite Radio car, but it's what we had and we'll take it. The track is in great shape and it's a beautiful day, so we couldn't ask for much better conditions to qualify here today. For the team, a lot of the sponsors are located in the Chicago area so that makes it a little extra special."

George Klotz, Team Manager, #7 XM Satellite Radio Dallara/Honda/Firestone:

"I'm a little disappointed in our speed. I thought we had a little bit more in the XM Satellite Radio car than that. It's fair, but we'd always like to be better. I think we've got a pretty good car for the race, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens tomorrow."
