FORT WORTH-DALLAS (September 25, 2001) - Eddie Cheever is ready for the Chevy 500 Indy Racing Northern Light Series race Saturday, October 6 at Texas Motor Speedway. And judging from the smile on Cheever's face during a test session conducted at the speedway Tuesday, the former Indy 500 winner is looking forward to his initial trip to victory lane here.
Cheever spent the day testing his Cheever Indy Racing Dallara/Infiniti on the 1.5-mile superspeedway and reported positive results in several areas.
"When they resurfaced the speedway, we decided to come and test," said Cheever. "We went quicker today than the last time we were here.
"We came to Texas to work on aerodynamics and air resistance. With the new asphalt being so smooth, we are trying to take all the resistance out of the car that we can. The cooler temperatures like today create a higher amount of downforce and drag.
"Reducing resistance will be important to run good in the race. We always try to learn tricks to cheat physics."
Cheever has been a leading contender at Indy Racing events staged on 1.5-mile tracks such as Texas Motor Speedway. The Infiniti 35A powerplant has received much attention recently for improved performances.
"I know nobody will believe us, but the engine we will use is essentially the same as we ran at Atlanta earlier in the year," continued Cheever. "We have just been working on reliability and fuel mileage since then. We are expecting to be in the hunt at Texas."
The Chevy 500 will get the green flag at 3:00 p.m. (CDT) on October 6 with The Dallas Morning News Pole Day on Friday afternoon, October 5. Tickets for the Chevy 500 are available at the speedway ticket office, by calling (817) 215-8500, online at www.texasmotorspeedway.com and at Ticketmaster locations.
