Red Bull Cheever Racing completes first test of 2003
HOMESTEAD, Fla. (Jan. 10, 2003) -- Red Bull Cheever Racing completed its first test of the year at Homestead-Miami Speedway Jan. 9 and 10. Driver Buddy Rice was pleased with the first track test with the new Dallara chassis and Chevy Indy V8 engine. He completed over 500 trouble-free miles in the test.
"We are on a steep learning curve with the new Dallara chassis and Chevy motor, but we learned a lot of new things in this test," said Rice. "We are just working hard at understanding the ins and outs of our new Red Bull car."
Several teams participated in the test, but no official times were posted.
"It was a wide-open test." said Rice. "Some guys were working on qualifying setup, some on their motors, and some on race setup. At a test like this it is hard to see 100-percent where we are. We are focused on our program, not everyone else. Everyone has their own agenda."
The test was also the first at-track work day for the new employees at MCT, who will be managing the technical development for both Red Bull Cheever Racing and Team Menard. Managing Director Max Jones was on hand to oversee the coordination between Red Bull Cheever Racing and MCT.
"We are already seeing the advantage of MCT," said Jones. "We will go back to Indy with what we learned from this test, evaluate everything and put a plan together for Test in the West. Overall, for our first test it went well. Everyone is very upbeat and excited for this season."
Next on the schedule for Red Bull Cheever Racing is the eighth annual "Test in the West" Feb. 3-7 at California Speedway and Phoenix International Raceway.
The season-opening Toyota Indy 300 will take place March 2 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The race will be broadcast live on ABC and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network.
