Fort Worth, TX - ...
Fort Worth, TX - #51 Excite@Home driver Eddie Cheever Jr. notched his seventh top ten qualifying effort of the nine round 2000 Indy Racing Northern Light Series at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday and will start the season-ending Excite 500 from the outside of the fifth row. Cheever started fifth and led six laps before a fuel miscalculation caused him to finish ninth at Texas in June. Cheever and his #51 Excite@Home crew are currently third in the Indy Racing standings with 217 points, forty-one points behind series leader Buddy Lazier and only three points behind Scott Goodyear.
The Excite 500 will be broadcast at 4:00pm EDT on October 15 on ABC.
Eddie Cheever Jr. (on Saturday practice): "We expect to be in traffic all day tomorrow, so we worked on running in a pack. The #51 Excite@Home car is very good in traffic. But I'm not looking forward to another race like we had here in June, with everyone bunched together. I'm aiming to be out in front so I can let the other guys fight it out behind me."
On his qualifying effort: "The #51 Excite@Home car ran well, but we didn't go as fast as we should have. We've done some full tank testing and we're happy with what we're doing. The trick here is to find the right dance partner, him or her, and go dancing."
On Texas Motor Speedway: "We have so many great venues in the Indy Racing series, but I have to say that Texas is a very special place for us to race. There's some great history here with Foyt, Rutherford, and Ruby. You don't have to tell Texans what open wheel racing is about - they know."
