QUALIFYING NOTES July 23, 1998
1998 Indy 500 winner, Eddie Cheever, took the 12th position in today's Pep Boys Indy Racing League qualifier to start Saturday night's VisionAire 500k from the sixth row. Cheever drove his #51 Rachel's Gourmet Potato Chips/TCGB/Team Cheever Dallara over North Carolina's 1.5-mile tri-oval at an average speed of 214.46 m.p.h with a time of 25.179 seconds, just seven one-hundreths of a second shy of leader, Tony Stewart.
ON THE QUALIFYING "No doubt, qualifying is very important, historically, however, our team prefers to concentrate on the race. We are still about 3 miles per hour from where we want and need to be. The car is better than it has been all day, but we need to push a bit farther before race time. "
ON THE TRACK "I've always liked this track. There are a few bumps that you have to be aware of, especially in Turn 4, but I'm actually happy the bumps are there. Bumps make the handling more difficult and becomes another problem that you need to solve before race time....it gives the weekend character and the race more interesting."
ON THE RACE "This is a venue I look forward to all year long. The fans here are great. Since I've gotten off the plane folks have been coming up and expressing their enthusiasm on last year's race as well as their anticipation for this year's. I don't think they'll be disappointed."
