Pikes Peak, Colo. - June 17, 2000 - Walker Racing rookie drivers Sarah Fisher, in the #15 Cummins Special/Oldsmobile/Dallara/Firestone, and Shinji Nakano in the #5 Avex/Honda/Firestone qualified today for their respective series at two totally different types of racetracks and climates. Ironically, both rookies qualified within one starting position of each other, Nakano on the 2.346-mile temporary street course in Detroit, and Fisher at the 1-mile oval at Pikes Peak, Colorado. Nakano had a best lap time of 1:16.473, which put him in 23rd position to start on Sunday's race at Belle Isle, the first street course he has ever run in CART. The Walker race team has been focused on getting the car setup to suit Shinji. "I have been getting used to this type of course," said Nakano. "Although I raced similar cars in F1, the CART cars react differently. I've also been learning this street course at Detroit, and just getting miles on the car." 19-year old Fisher had a quick lap of 169.372 mph (21.255 sec), which put her in the field in 22nd position. "The car got really loose out there during qualifying," said Fisher. "I had to work with my sway bars in the car while I was qualifying, and when that happens, you can't get your best lap time. However, we have been spending 95% of our time this weekend working on our race setup, not our qualifying setup - that is what will matter most, how we do in the race tomorrow." Fisher finished in tenth position in today's final IRL practice, with a top speed of 168.761 (21.131 sec). Nakano will have his final CART practice session on Sunday morning from 9 - 9:30 a.m. Spend an afternoon of "racing" with Sarah and Shinji on Sunday, June 18. Start with the CART Tenneco Automotive Grand Prix of Detroit which will be broadcast live on ESPN at 1 p.m. (ET) and follow with the Indy Racing Northern Light Series Radisson 200, broadcast live on ABC at 4 p.m. (ET). Walker Racing's corporate sponsor partners are avex, Alpine, Mitsuba, Cummins, Mead, Emlrockfort, Dell Computer Corporation,, NGK, St. Elmo Steakhouse, Honda, Reynard and Firestone.
