In a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Championship Drivers Association, Inc., with primary offices in Indianapolis, Indiana, veteran driver Adrian Fernandez was chosen to fulfill the term of office vacated by the retired Mauricio Gugelmin.
In accordance with the by-laws of the Championship Drivers Association, the Board elected Adrian to fill the term of office until December 30, 2004. Directors are permitted to serve a two-year term of office and are elected by the members. If a director vacates that post, the Board then selects his replacement. Directors may only serve two concurrent terms in office.
Gugelmin served the CDA as its Chairman for the past two years and began his second term in January of 2002. His retirement brought about the necessity of replacing him with an active and competing driver. Gugelmin brought a business savvy to the CDA and worked tirelessly to improve driver safety, working conditions, and salaries during his term. He is very respected by all the drivers and the officials in the CART community, where he competed. Mauricio will remain as an advisor to the board.
Adrian, likewise, will bring a great deal of business savvy to the table. He is an owner as well as driver. He has distinguished himself as a gentleman and proved his effectiveness as a leader in forming his own racing team in 2001. Adrian has been a competitor in the FedEx CART series since 1993. He started racing at age eight. He is the only competing owner/driver in the CART series.
The Board of Directors consists of Robbie Buhl, Vice Chairman for IRL affairs and Jimmy Vasser in addition to Adrian, who will function as CDA Chairman.
Jon R. Potter, in his twenty-third year as Executive Director will remain in that post and handle the day-to-day activities from the CDA offices.
