Fontana, CA: Richie Hearn finished 14th in the Yamaha Indy 400 from the California Speedway in his #99 Sam Schmidt Motorsports Racing Special. Hearn was substituting for injured driver Anthony Lazzaro.
"The new motor just didn't pull like the first one, " said Hearn. "We were fast off the truck. It's a shame because the car was good and handled well. We had a mechanical problem in the morning warm up so we really didn't get in any laps, but the crew did a great job getting the car ready for the race. I must have run over some debris and we cut a tire so I had to make an extra pit stop, but it really didn't cost us any positions. I know we had a strong car and we should have been able to run up front."
The next event is the Firestone Indy 225 from the Nazareth Speedway on April 21, 2002.
