May 27, 1999 Chris Paulsen, Owner of C & R Racing, Inc., announced today the 2nd annual winner of the "True Grit" Award to be presented during Carburetion Day festivities at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Paulsen was an Indy Car chief mechanic for many years and now is the owner of C & R Racing, Inc., a machine/fabrication business started in 1988 catering to the auto racing industry. This year C & R Racing is joined by Visteon Climate Control Systems in presenting this $10,000 award.
Owen Snyder, Chief Mechanic for Team Cheever, was named the winner of this annual award.
This award was created to honor a colleague who exemplifies the following criteria:
* Outstanding achievement * Overcoming adversity * Excellence in preparation and management. * Indy experience * Dedication to the highly skilled trade of working on Indy Cars * Overall racing background * Performance during May
Paulsen said "Owen's extensive background of working on race cars along with his outstanding record at the Indy 500 more than qualifies him for this award. Team Cheever isn't a large team with a big sponsor but with Owen's leadership you couldn't tell that from the outside. The team is not only very professional but also very competitive. Owen has been around open wheel racing all of his life and started working at Patrick Racing in 1981. He was the winning chief mechanic with Al Unser Jr. in 1992 and Eddie Cheever in 1998. Owen Snyder is definitely what the C&R Racing True Grit award is all about."
Along with Chris Paulsen, a 3 man committee comprised of Phil Casey, IRL Technical Director, Brian Barnhart, IMS Director of Racing Operations, and Robin Miller, Indianapolis Star Sports Columnist voted on the deserving mechanic.
C & R Racing will present a similar award during the Brickyard with similar requirements.
