Lazier to Pilot 3rd Chevy IndyCar at Two Events
FORT WORTH, Tex. -- Panther Racing announced today that it will enter a car in at least two more IndyCar™ Series events this year for 1996 Indianapolis 500 Champion Buddy Lazier.
Lazier, who drove to a fifth place finish in the Indianapolis 500 last month, will make his next IndyCar start for Panther Racing at Nashville Superspeedway and will also compete at Michigan International Speedway in July.
"We were very impressed with Buddy Lazier's performance for us at Indianapolis and we would really like to give him the opportunity to win a race in 2005," said Panther Racing co-owner Gary Pedigo. "Everyone at Panther Racing has been trying to find a way to get Buddy back in one of our cars and thanks to Chevrolet and our other sponsors, we are going to be able to make that happen."
Lazier, who has won eight IRL races in his career, won at Nashville in 2001. Buddy is tied for second on the IndyCar Series' all-time win list with fellow competitor Scott Sharp.
"Panther Racing is a first class organization and I can't wait to get back in one of those cars," said Lazier, who won the 2000 IndyCar championship. "All I asked from the team at Indianapolis was that Panther Racing give me a car that could win and they did just that. I know with Panther Racing's personnel and Chevrolet power behind me, I will have a chance to win both of these races also."
Pedigo noted that he was hopeful the team could find the additional funding to keep Lazier in the car at more races in 2005, but felt like the team had to take the first step on its own.
"His talent impressed us enough that Chevrolet and Panther Racing have decided to take the financial risk on the funding of this effort. It is our hope, however, that we can find the appropriate funding to race more than just these two events," Pedigo said. "Buddy is a very talented racecar driver, a fantastic person and a great sport and company spokesperson. I firmly believe that we can find the right sponsor to put Buddy in a Panther car more often this year."
