There's no doubt that this has been a building year for the CURB/Agajanian/Boat Indy Racing team. When Billy Boat decided to take on a larger part in the ownership and management of the team and move the team to Phoenix, he understood that there would be challenges and a period of"growing pains."
Back in May, when preparing for the infamous Indy 500, Boat stated,"I really have to credit the entire CURB Records team-- the #98 crew. They're doing a tremendous job.... They are really a great bunch of guys and the reality is that it's a pretty new team. We have three new rookie guys from Phoenix, and this is their first 500, and I think they're learning in a big way."
The team continued to improve and solidify, spurred in part by the successful switch to Infiniti power mid-season. By September, although the race finishes weren't what he was hoping for, Billy Boat was able to look back and appreciate how far the team had come," We've taken the team up a notch since the beginning of the season, we've improved a lot and we've really got the potential for big triumphs. Unfortunately, we've had some bad luck and some persistent gremlins, so we don't have a lot of results to show for it."
"Right now," says Boat,"it's a little bit of a sigh to step back & look back at what we've built. Now, we'll be able to continue to work on our program for next year."
He believes that trials and tribulations that the team has had to endure over the past seven months has led to the formation of a team that is dedicated, loyal and feels that they have a stake in the future success of the operation.
"We learned a lot as a team this year," comments Boat.
"We started as the inexperienced underdogs with big hopes and ended the season as real contenders for the podium. There's no reason that we won't be up front from the beginning next year. I think everyone's a lot more confident and feels a real sense of accomplishment and achievement when they look back on the 2002 season. We're really looking forward to Florida in March. We'll be back next year and we'll be back bigger and stronger than ever."
The 2003 Indy Racing League season opens on March 2 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
