The official track record for the 3.37-mile Watkins Glen long course was set by Andrea Montermini driving a Ferrari 333SP in 1997. During the IndyCar Series open test at the Watkins Glen, several drivers were faster than Montermini's time of 1:38.573. The Formula One record, set by Bruno Giacomelli (1:33.291) was one the 3.37-mile long course which included a chicane midway up the hill in the esses but did not include the bustop chicane at the end of the back straight.

Graham Rahal, son of Rahal Letterman Racing co-owner Bobby Rahal won the Formula Atlantic National championship at the SCCA Runoffs at Mid-Ohio on Friday afternoon.

When the IndyCar Series returns to Watkins Glen in 2006 they will once again be joined by the Grand American Rolex Series. The June 2-4 weekend will feature the Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen on June 3 with the Menards Infiniti Pro Series and IndyCar Serie competing on June 4.

The Zippo Historic Grand Prix event is providing Glen flashbacks this weekend. Notable entries include Mario Andretti's Lotus 79, Allan Jones' Williams FW07/4 and Peter Revson's McLaren M-23/14.

Toyota will launch on Monday a national campaign to increase awareness of the benefits of their gasoline/electric Hybrid Synergy Drive system, which currently powers the Prius and Highlander. "Hybrid Synergy Drive is a core technology that will play a key role in virtually all Toyota models in the years ahead," says Jim Farley, Toyota marketing vice president. Toyota recently established a goal of selling more than 1 million hybrids a year globally early in the next decade, about 600,000 annually in the U.S.

Mark Thomas, 5-time International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Funny Car champion, had his ethanol-powered funny car on display on Capitol Hill earlier this week. Machines competing in the 2006 IndyCar Series championship will burn an ethanol mix before moving to ethanol in 2007. Congressional members and staff met with Thomas along with members of the National Corn Growers Association.

Total August 2005 sales were $1,288.1 million, an increase of 17.9 percent over August 2004 sales of $1,092.1 million. Total merchandise sales for August 2005 were $762.6 million, an increase of 6.1 percent over the August 2004 total of $718.7 million. U.S. same-store merchandise sales for August 2005 increased 4.8 percent, on top of a 2.1 percent increase in August 2004.
