Despite the fact that only three drivers, Mark Taylor, Ed Carpenter and Kosuke Matsuura, are eligible for rookie points this weekend, a total of seven drivers have never competed at Pikes Peak International Raceway. In addition to the rookies listed above, Townsend Bell, Darren Manning, Adrian Fernandez and Bryan Herta are racing at PPIR for the first time. Herta substituted for the Dario Franchitti at Andretti Green Racing starting at the first Texas race in June of 2003. Thinking he was ready to make a full time return to the sport after an April motorcycle accident, Franchitti competed at PPIR in 2003, finishing fourth.

Firestone delivered 760 Firehawk radials for the two-day PPIR event. All were produced at Firestone's technical center in Akron, Ohio. The tire used at PPIR is the same compound that was used at Pikes Peak in 2003 and earlier in the season at Milwaukee.

Kosuke Matsuura was involved in a single car incident in the second practice session when his car did a half spin and impacted the turn four wall. "There was no sign of a problem with the car, so I don't know why I spun," said Matsuura. After being examined by Dr. Henry Bock, IRL Sr. Director of Medical Services, Matsuura has been cleared to drive.
