Shortly after 5:00 p.m., Felipe Giaffone misjudged the entrance to turn three and soon found himself outside the track's groove. Despite an attempt to restore control of the car, the right side of his Purex Dallara made contact with the trailing edge of the SAFER Barrier in turn three. After sliding along the outside wall in the north chute, Giaffone made contact with the leading edge of the SAFER barrier in turn four. The car came to a stop at the exit of turn four, where Giaffone climbed from the car unassisted.

After turning 21 laps in the Meijer Coca Cola Dallara-Chevrolet, Robby Gordon left for Charlotte, NC, where he will test his Cingular Chevrolet at the Lowes Motor Speedway. Gordon is expected to return to Indianapolis on Wednesday to continue preparations for the 500.

The "Toro Fast Track Lunch on Monument Circle" will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12 at Monument Circle, located in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. The event is presented by WIBC and admission is free. The Indianapolis Convention and Visitor's Association is conducting a simultaneous event called "Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown," from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Circle. WIBC's event will feature a number of Indy 500-themed attractions, including the Indy Racing Fan Experience, Indy 500 show cars, vintage race cars and other attractions. 500 Festival princesses will also participate. WIBC personality Dave "The King" Wilson will participate in a Toro tractor race around the Circle.

The Indianapolis Star reported that Roger Penske has not ruled out leasing one of its spare cars to a team interested in competing in the 500. Last year, Sam Schmidt Motorsports leased a car from Penske in an eleventh hour deal to compete with driver Richie Hearn. The Star also reported that Toyota is making available a two engine program for Bump Day and the race.

Jessica Simpson will be in town on race weekend to sing the national anthem prior to the start of the 88th running of the Indianapolis 500. Simpson's husband Nick Lachey will accompany her to Indianapolis and will get the nod to throw the green flag on race day. Lachey will also introduced Carb Day musical guests Blues Traveler and Kenny Brack and the Subwoofers.

Marlboro Team Penske drivers Helio Castroneves and Sam Hornish will be making personal appearances at two of Penske's local car dealerships. Meet Sam Hornish at Penske Chevrolet at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 12. Helio Castroneves will make an appearance at Penske Honda at 7:00 p.m. May 12.
