Automobile Magazine Writer Preston Lerner logged 114 miles in the No. 51 The Children's Beverage Group/Team Cheever Infiniti/Dallara/Goodyear Indy car at Pikes Peak International Raceway on Monday, Aug. 31. The test was scheduled one day after the Pep Boys Indy Racing League race at Pikes Peak where Infiniti driver Eddie Cheever Jr. finished 11th.

The test started with Indy 500 winner Eddie Cheever taking Lerner around the one-mile oval in the Infiniti Indy Q45 production vehicle. Cheever showed Lerner the proper driving line to take in the Indy car. Once Lerner was familiar with the cockpit of the Indy car, he went on track under the guidance of Cheever, and Infiniti Motorsports Manager Frank Honsowetz via radio communication.

Lerner slowly built up his speed on track, ran a simulation of a yellow-flag situation where he had to concentrate on fuel mileage, and practiced pit stops. By his final stint in the Indy car, Lerner was very consistent, recording a streak of 24 second laps. His quickest lap was 24.4 seconds, an average speed of 147.08 mph, and a top speed of 163 mph. His fastest time was only 3.5 seconds slower than the fastest time recorded one day earlier in the Colorado Indy 200.

"It was a thrill," Lerner said. "I just want to thank Infiniti and Team Cheever for the opportunity to test the Indy car on an oval. It will make for a really good story."

Lerner's story about his experience driving the Infiniti Indy Q45 and the Infiniti-powered Team Cheever Indy car on the one-mile Pikes Peak oval will appear in a future issue of Automobile Magazine.
