Schmidt Speeds His Way to Highest Start of His Career
Atlanta, GA: Treadway Racing's star driver stated that qualifying today was just a matter of "giving it the best he could" and let the cards fall where they may. For the Las Vegas native, this philosophy proved true as he was dealt the best hand of his career to date with a third place start on the grid for tomorrow's Kobalt Mechanics Tools 500 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.
After two back-to-back podium finishes from the IRL events at Texas and Colorado Springs, Schmidt's confidence is high, and the Treadway Racing crew has put together a winner for tomorrow's race.
The team and driver combination fell in sync like clockwork this weekend as they topped all of the speed charts on the first day of practice. The speeds carried over into today's first practice session as Schmidt was on top until the honors were wrested from him at the last moment by Scott Goodyear by a mere one-tenth of a second. "I felt pretty good about it," he said. "I'm a little disappointed that we didn't go as fast as yesterday, but as long as we are on top tomorrow-that is all that counts!"
The crew and driver were fully prepared and psyched for Georgia Power Pole night, and Schmidt gave it a great run in his #99 Sprint PCS entry and settled comfortably into second position on the front row. However, fate stepped in and a late, surprise run from competitor Billy Boat stole the pole position and pushed the field back one notch to place Schmidt on the inside of the second row for tomorrow's race start.
"The car was just great," Schmidt stated after his run. "It has been great all weekend. I am a little disappointed because I thought that we might beat Greg (Ray). And then Billy (Boat)-I just don't know where that came from! But I think it is just a sign of the competitiveness of this series. I think my Sprint PCS crew has done a fabulous job this year and I am pleased to be starting this high. There is going to be a lot of drafting tomorrow and we will have to make some quick decisions, but I think the car is great in traffic and we are just fine on horsepower. I am looking forward to a great race tomorrow!"
