Atlanta 500 Classic -- Atlanta Motor Speedway
Friday, April 27, 2001 - Practice and Qualifying Session Notes
Firehawk Riding Ray Sizzles In Hotlanta
Team Menard driver Greg Ray earned a place in the Firestone record books tonight by earning the pole for Sunday's Atlanta 500 Classic. With a speed of 218.265 mph, Ray became the first Firestone-equipped IRL driver to reach double digits in poles earned - 10.
Quote from Bridgestone/Firestone Motorsports Director Al Speyer: "We congratulate Greg and Team Menard for another stunning pole. From what we've seen today in practice and qualifying, it's obvious the Atlanta area race fans are going to see a good show here tomorrow night. This is a great track, with lots of room for tire-to-tire racing, and the banking allows the drivers to maintain speed. That can be tough on tires, but the teams and drivers are telling us the tire construction and compound for this event are both right on the mark. The compound may be described as somewhat hard, which resists wear and helps to reduce rubber marbles on the track. With less marbles, the fans should see a good amount of passing and cars regularly running two abreast, sometimes three abreast, throughout the race."
Greg Ray, Dallara/Oldsmobile/Firestone: "The bottom line is, you have to execute on race night. You don't want to count your chickens before they hatch, but as long as we don't have any gremlins, I think we'll be in pretty good shape. This track can be pretty abrasive on tires, but the Firestones have been fabulous; they're perfect. We ran 30 laps on one set in practice and our times were consistent from start to finish.

The money will be used to purchase infant car seats for needy families in the Atlanta area.
