Davey Hamilton Fines Tunes His Victory Skills Before Atlanta
Albuquerque, NM, July 12, 1999 - Always eager to race and even more eager to win, Indy Racing League Driver Davey Hamilton thought he should try a refresher course in winning before the Kobalt Mechanics Tools 500 presented by MCI WorldCom at Atlanta Motorspeeday on July 17.
Hamilton, driver of the Galles Racing Spinal Conquest, won the USAC Western Series Sprint Car race in Carson City Nevada on Saturday July 10th. Hamilton started from the pole and went on to clinch a win.
"I love winning anything, and it felt good. I don't run a lot of races outside of the IRL anymore because I want to stay focused on my main job, but Rick Galles and I have an agreement for me to run a few races here and there, and this was one of them. I had a blast, and now I am even more excited about going to Atlanta to race next weekend," says Hamilton.
Hamilton finished 2nd in Atlanta last year after starting in the 10th position. He led 19 of the 208 laps and finished close behind winner Kenny Brack.
"Atlanta was a great race last year. We were competitive the entire race and ran at the front the whole time. We feel pretty confident with our set-up, and my engineer Alan Mertens is catching onto the IRL cars very fast. He gave me a great race set-up for Pikes Peak and we finished 3rd, so I think we will be strong in Atlanta.
Bruton Smith's tracks always put on such a great show, and that makes it great for the drivers and the fans. Atlanta is no exception, and I think it will be a great race. The one thing that I do know is that it is going to be incredibly hot and everyone will have to take care of their tires. Goodyear has worked closely with us on our tire set-up and I think we will be o.k.," says Hamilton.
Davey Hamilton is currently in 7th place in the Indy Racing League points championship with 107 points and has completed every Indy Racing League event to date since its inception in 1996.
Race Fans can watch Davey Hamilton race for the checkered flag at the Kobalt Mechanics Tools 500 live at 7:30 p.m. (EDT) July 17 on FOX Sports Net. SpeedVision will televise PPG Pole qualifying live at 6 p.m. (EDT) July 16.
