Michael Andretti turned 43 practice laps at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, recording the fastest lap of the day at 221.579 mph. Andretti, a veteran of 15 races at the historic speedway, was on track during the second and final day of rookie orientation and refresher laps for veterans.
"I'm real happy," said Andretti. "We worked with the car a bit and I worked on myself a bit. We still have some more work to do until I feel comfortable."
Andretti was up to speed quickly yesterday, turning a total of 11 laps before setting the fastest lap of the day at 219.871 mph. "The initial feel comes quickly, but the comfort, where you can sit back a relax takes more time."
Andretti's quick times in the first two days of practice are in sharp contrast to last year when all five Andretti Green Racing drivers struggled throughout the month to find speed. Nevertheless, "we were running 1-2-3-4 after the first few laps," Andretti said
Ryan Briscoe was second fastest on the day, the only other driver to break the 221 mph barrier with a lap at 221.427. Briscoe turned 52 laps, recording his fastest on his 49th tour of the circuit.
Davey Hamilton turned laps for the second day. Hamilton who reported no problems after recording 26 laps yesterday, said he was a little bit sore above his right knee this morning. With his knees and feet feeling good, Davey said he would be fine after making some adjustments to his seat. Hamilton was third fastest on the day at 220.214 mph.
The top three drivers remained unchanged from yesterday.
Phil Giebler drove the No. 21 Playa Del Racing Panoz chassis for a total of 52 laps, recording his best lap of 217.091 mph. Giebler was fourth fastest on the day. Jaques Lazier turned 12 laps in the same car and managed to get it up to 215.235 mph.
Jon Herb and Milka Duno also turned laps today. They were fifth and sixth fastest, respectively. Herb went 216.763 and Duno's best was 215.0949. Duno has recorded 153 laps at the Speedway, the most of any driver. She turned 79 laps on Sunday and 74 today.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is open to all drivers competing in the 91st running of the event starting at 12:00 noon tomorrow.
