Jim Beam Inks Two Year Deal with Andretti Green Racing to Renew Indy Racing League Sponsorship
World's number one bourbon proves a pioneer in motor sports and social responsibility
Deerfield, Ill., Sept. 9, 2004 - Jim Beam, the first distilled spirits company to venture into motor sports, announced today it has extended its sponsorship of Andretti Green Racing and the No. 26 car driven by Dan Wheldon for the next two years in the Indy Racing League IndyCar® Series. The world's leading bourbon producer will also serve as an associate sponsor on the race cars of Tony Kanaan, Dario Franchitti and Bryan Herta.
"We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Andretti Green Racing through the 2006 season," said Keith Neumann, marketing director, Jim Beam U.S. "Racing resonates well with our core consumer and provides a platform to discuss the importance of responsible drinking among legal purchase age consumers who choose to drink. Michael Andretti and Dan Wheldon are not only amazing athletes, they're terrific brand spokespersons. We look forward to a future filled with success."
Since being named the 2003 IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year, Wheldon has enjoyed a stellar sophomore season with nine top-five finishes, including his first career IndyCar Series win at Twin Ring Motegi in Japan. The 26-year-old native of Emberton England, who now resides in Indianapolis, also claimed victories in Richmond, Va., and Nazareth, Pa. Wheldon is currently second in the championship standings with three races to go.
"I'm very pleased with Jim Beam's decision to continue its support of Andretti Green Racing," Wheldon said. "We have accomplished a lot together and Jim Beam has led the way for distilled spirits in motor sports. I look forward to many more wins with them next year."
The Leader in Corporate Responsibility In 2003, Jim Beam became the first contributor to The Michael Andretti Foundation, which promotes programs for better health, education and welfare of America's citizens. An initial $100,000 contribution in 2003 - and another $100,000 contribution in 2004 - was made to further the Jim Beam "Drink Smart" message, which is a part of the company's ongoing efforts to promote responsible choices about alcohol. Throughout the IRL IndyCar® Series season, Andretti donated a portion of the fund to local universities in various race markets on behalf of his foundation, Jim Beam and The Century Council, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting responsible decision-making regarding beverage alcohol. The money went to help fund each school's implementation of The Century Council's new Alcohol 101 Plus education program and related alcohol education activities.
"I am eager to continue the relationship with Jim Beam because we share the same passion for racing and the importance of responsibility," said Michael Andretti, who co-owns Andretti Green Racing with partners Kim Green and Kevin Savoree. "Their support has grown into a true partnership. In addition to its sponsorship of the team, they are also a strong supporter of The Michael Andretti Foundation."
Jim Beam is the first distilled spirits company to demonstrate corporate responsibility in motor sports and encourages all legal-purchase age adults who choose to drink to Drink Smart®. To reinforce the importance of this message, Jim Beam also uses a Drink Smart two-seater car to help communicate the importance of responsible decision-making regarding alcohol. Wheldon will continue to feature the Drink Smart icon on his firesuit and race car.
