Phoenix, Arizona, February 21, 2000 - If Al Unser Jr. had a home track, Phoenix International Raceway would be it. Those were the words that came from the open racing wheel veteran, as he climbed from his Galles ECR Racing Tickets.com Starz Encore Superpak car today at the Indy Racing League open test in Phoenix.
Over the years Unser has spent a considerable amount of time at Phoenix International Raceway. "This track holds a lot of memories for me, both on the track and off. I watched my family race here since I was a young boy, and I raced Indy Cars here for over 10 years. I know this track very well, and I am excited to get back here and do some racing in March. If I had a home track, this would be it," said Unser.
Unser, who has not raced at Phoenix International Raceway since 1995, has been testing at the IRL open test in Phoenix in preparation for the MCI Worldcom Indy 200 on March 19.
"We learned a lot about the car this week, but it was also a bit frustrating because we only had 45 minutes on the track at a time and 45 minutes between sessions. We just kept taking stabs at the setups with each session, which is not the most ideal situation for testing.
But, the alternative to that is not great because there would be too many cars on the track if we just ran together all day. The IRL always keeps safety at the forefront of every event, which is why they split the sessions today and yesterday. I think they made the right decision," said Unser.
Unser felt that the close times during the test were a sign of the intense competition that fans will see throughout the 2000 Indy Racing League season.
"This is some pretty close racing, and the times are what proves it. To have those close of times on such a short track just means that the racing is going to be very intense on raceday. It was like this at Orlando too, so it will probably be very competitive throughout the season. That is what makes great racing, and I can't wait to get out on the track race weekend," exclaimed Unser.
Unser will get a chance to utilize his testing efforts at Phoenix International Raceway at the MCI Worldcom Indy 200 at on March 19. Coverage of the event begins live on ABC at 2:00 p.m. (EST).
