Today's IRL headlines
1. Hornish Gets Hitched
2. Rice To Appear On Letterman on June 9
3. Autograph Sessions, Appearances Planned At Texas
1. Hornish Gets Hitched: Two-time Indy Racing League champion Sam Hornish Jr., married Crystal Liechty on June 5.
The 24-year old Hornish and his bride were married in front of approximately 500 guests at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Indianapolis. Among the guests was Hornish's teammate at Marlboro Team Penske, two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves.
Following the ceremony, the couple climbed into a horse-drawn carriage for a moment alone before returning for the reception, which was also held at Scottish Rite Cathedral. After the reception, the Hornishs returned to their new home in Ohio because the IndyCar Series schedule precludes them from having a honeymoon.
After Saturday night's Bombardier 500K at Texas Motor Speedway, the couple will fly to Las Vegas for a few days.
2. Rice On Letterman On June 9: After spending a week of media appearances following his Indianapolis 500 win, Buddy Rice will return to New York to appear on "The Late Show With David Letterman" on June 9.
Indianapolis native David Letterman, who hosts the popular late-night talk show, co-owns the cars of Rice and Vitor Meira with 1986 Indianapolis 500 winner Bobby Rahal. He attended the 500 and witnessed his first win as an IndyCar Series car owner.
"It has been in his backyard and he has been going to the race since he was a kid," Rice said of Letterman's relationship with the Indianapolis 500. "It's the biggest race that he has always wanted to win. That was the whole reason he became a team owner and involved in racing.
"I think it was excellent. I was just glad he was able to be there, to take it in and be a part of the victory."
3. Autograph session planned for Texas: Race fans will get the chance to meet some of their favorite drivers from the IndyCar Series during the Bombardier 500k race week.
An autograph session is scheduled for Friday, June 3 prior to the O'Reilly 400k Truck Series race. The session is planned for 6 p.m. The events will take place outside between gates 3 and 4 near the IRL Fan Experience.
In addition, several IndyCar Series drivers will make appearances throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area to promote the event. Among them are: Felipe Giaffone and car owner Robbie Buhl and the Team Purex/Dreyer & Reinbold showcar will visit the Children's Medical Center of Dallas as part of the Racing for Kids program on June 9.
Adrian Fernandez will make appearances at the Carnival Food Stores in Dallas and Plano, Texas on June 9.
The 2004 IRL IndyCar Series season continues with the Bombardier 500K at 8 p.m. (EDT) on June 12 at Texas Motor Speedway. The race will be broadcast live on ESPN and the IMS Radio Network. The Menards Infiniti Pro Series Aventis Racing for Kids 100 will take place on July 3 at Kansas Speedway. The race will be broadcast at 7:30 p.m. (EDT) on July 4 by ESPN2.
