INDIANAPOLIS, Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002 -- Indy Racing League driver Richie Hearn was released Aug. 14 from Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after undergoing surgery Aug. 11 on his right ankle, Dr. Kevin Scheid said.
With only three races remaining on the IRL schedule, Hearn will not return to the race car before the end of the season, said Dr. Henry Bock, director of medical services for the Indy Racing League. Bock estimates recovery time at eight to 10 weeks.
Orthopedic specialists Scheid and Dr. Terry Trammell performed the surgery late on Aug. 11. Hearn broke his ankle in a Turn 2 crash on Lap 24 of the Belterra Casino Indy 300 earlier that day at Kentucky Speedway.
Indy Racing Infiniti Pro Series driver Jason Priestley is listed in guarded condition at Methodist Hospital, said Dr. Scott Bjerke, medical director of Trauma Services for Methodist Hospital.
Priestley, 32, from Vancouver, British Columbia, suffered multiple injuries in an Infiniti Pro Series practice accident Aug. 11 at Kentucky Speedway. He suffered a moderate concussion as well as a fracture of his ninth thoracic vertebra. In addition to a contusion around his left eye, Priestley has lacerations on the bridge of his nose and left cheek, neck lacerations and fractures in both feet.
Bernie Hallisky, the left-rear tire changer for Kelley Racing's No. 78 entry, remains at Methodist Hospital awaiting additional surgery, Scheid said. Hallisky, of Shelbyville, Ind., underwent surgery Aug. 11 for a compound fracture of his right leg, multiple fractures in his pelvis and a left hip fracture, said Scheid, who performed the operation. No date has been set for the additional surgery.
Hallisky's injuries were a result of an accident on pit road during the Belterra Casino Indy 300.
Updates will be released by the Indy Racing League when available.
