Duno Building Speed in Practice and Qualifying Sessions
LOS ANGELES, CA (June 19, 2010) - IZOD IndyCar driver Milka Duno's warm-up lap in today's qualifying session for the Iowa Corn Indy 250 on Sunday, June 20 at Iowa Speedway was as fast at the ultimate pole winner's - but a spin over the bump in turn 2 sent her into the wall and brought an end to what started to look like a top-ten qualifying position.
Duno got out of the car and was transported to the track's medical center and was quickly released and cleared to drive in Sunday's 250-lap race.
Duno has been dramatically building up speed in practice and qualifying sessions starting with the race at Texas Motor Speedway - which shows that both the team and Duno are heading in the right direction.
In today's first practice session Duno was 20th quickest and she picked up four more positions in the second practice session by finishing 16th. Delivering a warm-up speed equal to that of the pole winner's showed even further improvement.
"We were doing really well, improving our speed from session to session and then at the start of qualifying," said Duno. "The right rear of the car didn't feel right in turn 1 and then when I went through the bump in turn 2 the car just went into a spin. I feel very bad for the team because they have been working so very hard and now they will have to work even harder to repair the car in time for the race tomorrow."
"Milka's line through the corners improved drastically in the first practice session," commented Pancho Carter, Duno's spotter. "In qualifying her first two laps looked perfect. She was pushing hard and just had a quick spin over that bump in turn 2."
"Milka was having another great weekend here is Iowa," said team owner Dale Coyne. "She was 16th in the morning session and her out lap in qualifying was as fast as pole winner Will Powers', unfortunately a quick spin over the bump in turn 2 ended her day. Milka is fine and we will have her car ready for tomorrow's race!"
Duno will start tomorrow's race, but as no qualifying time was posted she will start in the back of the pack.
The race will air live on VERSUS starting at 1:30pm ET.
