Briscoe Leads Way for Team Penske Wednesday at Indy
SPEEDWAY, Ind. (May 19, 2010) - Team Penske owned three of the top-eight times as practice for the 2010 Indianapolis 500 continued on Wednesday.
Ryan Briscoe led the way for the team on a cloudy and cool day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway by recording the second-fastest lap of the six-hour practice session. Briscoe clocked a top lap of 226.633 mph in the No. 6 Team Penske Dallara/Honda. Scott Dixon owned the fastest lap with a mark of 226.971 mph.
"We had a good solid day," said Briscoe, who qualified second for last year's Indy 500. "We were able to get quite a lot of work done on race setup related items. The three Team Penske cars were able to take advantage of being a three-car operation and we worked together on track today helping one another find speed and comfort. It really was a good day for the No. 6 Car and for the whole team."
Briscoe was followed by IZOD IndyCar Series points leader Will Power (225.703 mph in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske machine), who was sixth-fastest on the timing charts.
"We've been working away the last few days on our race setup and I think we're where we need to be," said Power. "I think the Verizon car has a good setup for the race and from now on we're just going to concentrate on qualifying. I can see it's going to be a very tight qualifying on Saturday. With the speeds as close as they are and the talent level in the field, it's going to be really tight. It was good to get in some solid running today with no interruptions because of the weather and hopefully it will be more of the same tomorrow."
Three-time Indy 500 champion Helio Castroneves owned the eighth-fastest lap of the day with a speed of 225.563 mph in the No. 3 Team Penske Dallara/Honda. Castroneves still holds the overall fastest time in practice with a quick lap of 227.046 mph posted during Sunday's session.
"All three Team Penske cars continued working together today," said Castroneves. "We tried to simulate what we might face in the race. We're working hard to make sure all three cars have a chance to be on top in the race. The weather was still a little cold today, but hopefully it's a better day tomorrow so we can focus on qualifying."
