During an incident-free afternoon, Power set his quickest lap on his 47^th tour at 224.656mph, with the benefit of a tow. However, 16mph wind gusts affected the cars, and appeared to artificially keep the speeds down.

“The grip’s pretty good,” said Power. “A lot of rubber has gone down. The car’s pretty good and I feel alright in traffic.”

Power was also fourth without the aid of a draft, although the Ed Carpenter Racing-Chevrolets of Ed Carpenter and JR Hildebrand were first and third in the no-tow speed charts, and tenth and ninth overall.

Power's Penske-Chevrolet teammate Helio Castroneves jumped to P2 overall at 224.287mph with 45-minutes of the session remaining but was down in 17th on the no-tow charts.

Gabby Chaves grabbed third in the final 10 minutes in his Harding Racing Chevrolet at 223.991mph, 19th overall, with Ryan Hunter-Reay the top Honda runner in fourth at 223.960mph for Andretti Autosport.

His teammate, two-time Formula 1 World Champion Fernando Alonso, racked up the most laps of anyone at 117, and joined in the slipstreaming for the first time in his IndyCar oval career. Often his laps were in an Andretti Autosport train, but he was also "dicing" with Power, AJ Foyt Racing's Carlos Munoz, and James Hinchcliffe of Schmidt Peterson Motorsports-Honda.

Alonso ended the six-hour session in 24th with a speed of 221.029mph, and was a very healthy 14th without the aid of a tow, third fastest of the Andretti Autosport sextet in that chart behind.

Also looking strong in the no-tow charts were the Chip Ganassi Racing-Hondas, with Charlie Kimball, Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan in second, fifth and tenth, respectively.
