Wheldon Finishes Sixth Overall in First Indy Practice; Sharp 15th; National Guard Driver One of Few Over 224 mph; Sharp Improves on Refresher Speed
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 7, 2009) -- National Guard driver Dan Wheldon posted the sixth-quickest speed in the first full day of practice for the 93rd Running of the Indianapolis 500, with Tequila Patron teammate Scott Sharp ending the day in the 15th overall position. Fast Friday practice will take place tomorrow between noon and 6 p.m. in preparations for Saturday's Pole Day qualifications, where the first 11 positions for the Indy 500 will be solidified.
Dan Wheldon, No. 4 National Guard Dallara Honda
"It was a reasonable day for the National Guard Panther Racing car. We had a little bit of mid exit understeer that we will work on dialing it out but the pace of the car is pretty good and there is some more work to do but it was a productive day. It's nice to have Scott Sharp on the team, he knows what it takes to be fast and that's a good addition. We were consistent on our feedbacks, so that's kind of nice too."
Scott Sharp, No. 16 Tequila Patron Panther Dallara Honda
"We didn't end up where we really wanted on the speed charts but we spent the day working on hard on a lot of different changes. The guys worked their tails off and I learned a lot but never had a real chance to show what we can do. We went out with a set of stickers at the end to run with less downforce but we ran out of time. A lot of the speeds that we saw today were drafting speeds, so I believe that we will be up there tomorrow."
