FIRESTONE FIREHAWK CARBURETION DAY REPORT
IZOD IndyCar Series - Indianapolis 500-Mile Race
Indianapolis Motor Speedway - Speedway, Ind.
Friday, May 28, 2010 - Round 6 of 17
Firestone Carburetion Day Highlights: The final practice session before Sunday's 94th Indy 500 went off without a hitch, as 1,254 laps were completed without tire issues. Many teams used the session to run full fuel stints for one of the first times this month. Target Chip Ganassi Racing driver Dario Franchitti posted the fastest lap of 225.574 mph. In addition, Wade Cunningham of Sam Schmidt Motorsports was victorious in today's Firestone Freedom 100, becoming the first three-time winner of the Firestone Indy Lights race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The Firestone tire specification for the Indianapolis 500 is all new following tire testing at the speedway in October 2009. The 2010 Firehawk spec features updated compound formulas for all four tire positions and a slight change to the construction of the left rear tire in a continuing effort to reduce understeer.
From Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "Following today's picture-perfect practice session, we can comfortably say that Firestone Racing is ready and raring to go for the Indianapolis 500. The IZOD IndyCar Series drivers have run 32,375 miles in preparation for Sunday and the new Firestone Firehawk tire specification has performed superbly throughout. Quite a few teams used today's session more than in the past to complete full stints, and all indicators are that the tire wear is excellent and there is little drop-off in performance throughout the run. Dario Franchitt i was fastest today and he also completed a 29-lap run in which his final timed lap was over 224 miles an hour. That shows the Firehawks are maintaining their grip and muscle even at the end of the stint. There are never any guarantees when it comes to this race, but we are very confident in how the Firestone tires will perform on race day. We also witnessed history today when Wade Cunningham became the first three-time winner of the Firestone Freedom 100. Wade has been a fine representative of Firestone Indy Lights and showed he's deserving of a look in the IZOD IndyCar Series."
From Dario Franchitti, #10 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone: "We ran a full tank on a set of tires today. With these hot temperatures, it puts the tires under a lot of stress but the Firestones held up well. As always, tire management is going to be key, with as hot as it's going to be, but we have a good car and we're looking forward to Sunday."
