Firestone Firehawk Race Tires Supplied:
* 5,100 dry-condition slicks; each car receives 35 sets (140 tires) for the entire month to use as its team determines for practice, qualifying and the race. Teams starting after the first week receive a prorated number of tires.
* Two tire staggers of approximately 0.35 and 0.44 of an inch are available for Indy. Stagger, which helps Indy cars turn more smoothly on oval tracks, is created by producing the right-rear tire with a slightly larger diameter than the left rear.
Following a successful 2007 performance at Indianapolis, Firestone Racing has selected the same Firehawk tire specification for use at this year's Indy 500. The identical spec also was used at Twin Ring Motegi in 2007 and '08.
From Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "The Indianapolis 500 is always highly anticipated, but with this year's open-wheel unification, the excitement and buzz is even greater. We finally have all of the top open-wheel teams back competing at Indy; that is tremendous news. The additional teams place an added burden on Firestone as the exclusive tire supplier to the Indy 500, but it is a welcome challenge for which we are well prepared with a tire specification already proven to stand up to the extreme demands of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Qualifying days should become even more dramatic this year, especially the 'Bump Day' which now includes the $50,000 Firestone Indy 500 Final Qualifier Award that goes to the last driver to successfully secure a spot in the field. It should be a sensational and most memorable month of May, and Firestone is proud to be part of this historic year and event."
Firestone "Tire-ific" Move of the Race: This prize is awarded after each IndyCar Series race to the driver who best utilizes his or her Firestone tires to make a bold, dramatic move during the event. It could be relying on the Firehawks' great grip to execute a daring pass, having the confidence in the tires' durability to run an extra stint on a set to improve position, or something else amazing. After each race, Firestone Racing officials will submit the three "Tire-ific" candidates to www.indycar.com, where fans cast their votes during the ensuing week to determine the award winner. The prize for the Indy 500 "Tire-ific" move is $20,000, double the amount for any other race.
