Conquest Racing posts best rookie finish for 2010 Indy 500

INDIANAPOLIS (May 30, 2010) - After placing both rookie drivers into this year's Indianapolis 500, Conquest Racing continued to surprise today with both rookies putting in clean, strong runs and with Mario Romancini finishing as the highest ranked rookie in the race.

Romancini, who completed all 200 laps, was the best first-year driver in the field thanks to a 13th place finish, which is also Conquest's second best finish at the famed 2.5-mile oval. His teammate Bertrand Baguette came in 22nd despite early problems.

Everything ran smoothly for Conquest Racing early on, as both drivers gradually made up positions with Romancini running as high as eighth before his second pit stop and Baguette making it to 19th before his first trip down pit lane.

While things continued to go according to plan on the #34 Armandolive.com car of Romancini, Baguette had bad luck in his #36 Angie's List Special machine. The Belgian driver inexplicably lost his right side mirror on lap 37 and was forced to return to the pits for a new one.

Although Baguette's hopes of being top rookie faded following his unexpected and lengthy pit stop, he soldiered on and ran strongly keeping his Conquest Dallara out of trouble and bringing it home in the 22nd place, while showing some great skills behind the wheel at his first trip to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Meanwhile, Romancini was also driving flawlessly and fighting for best rookie honors. Keeping his sights on his closest competitor, Simona De Silvestro, Romancini slowly closed in on his fellow rookie and made a pass on her on lap 178. But it didn't end there, as the driver of the #36 Armandolive.com car had to keep fighting off De Silvestro all while saving fuel.

In the end, despite some confusion during a last lap caution period, it was Romancini that came out on top of the rookie field making it two years in a row that Conquest Racing fields the best-finishing rookie at the Indianapolis 500.

After a busy few weeks in Indianapolis, the team has no time to rest as the next round on the IZOD IndyCar Series takes place next weekend, June 4 - 5, at Texas Motor Speedway.

13th - Mario Romancini, #34 Armandolive.com

"I'm very happy with the race today. I want to thank my team, my engineers, my team owner, and sponsors for their hard work and support. It was a tough day at my first Indy 500, but I learned a lot at the same time. There were a lot of crashes and I had to work hard to save fuel at the end. Even if it was a difficult day, I'm ecstatic to have finished as the highest ranked rookie. It's something I will always remember."

22nd - Bertrand Baguette, #36 Angie's List Special

"The crew gave me a quick car today. We were doing good lap times and running competitively until I lost my right side mirror on lap 37. I had to bring the car back in to replace the mirror which caused us to lose quite a few laps, which was really too bad because once I got back out on track, I continued to feel very comfortable in the car and was able to keep turning good lap times. Without that mirror problem we could have had a really good result. But overall, it was a great learning experience for me."
