Hunter-Reay cleared to drive at Pocono after 139G shunt

Ryan Hunter-Reay, who struck the Turn 3 wall at Pocono just as he was commencing his qualifying run yesterday, has been cleared to drive in today’s ABC Supply 500.

A press release stated that, following his release from hospital last night, the Andretti Autosport-Honda driver had been re-evaluated by IndyCar medical director Dr. Geoffrey Billows this morning “after sustaining injuries to his left knee and hip”.

Motorsport.com has learned that Hunter-Reay struck the wall at 139G, yet he cleared the CT scan [the check for concussion] and following an MRI scan and Dr. Billows’ examination he was given the all-clear.

Hunter-Reay’s was the third major shunt at Pocono on Saturday and he will be joined at the back of the grid by Ed Carpenter and Helio Castroneves.

Carpenter hit the wall in morning practice at the exact same spot as Hunter-Reay, and although he was quickly assessed and released by IndyCar Medical, his repaired car failed by six minutes to reach the tech inspection line.

Meanwhile Castroneves collided with the Turn 1 wall when his car slewed out of control at the start of his flying lap. He too was swiftly cleared by Medical.
