First turn crash takes out contenders in GP of Indy

Scott Dixon and Josef Newgarden were among those who suffered damage as cars scattered.

Last year it was a standing start that gave the Verizon IndyCar Series drivers trouble at the start when pole-sitter Sebastian Saavedra stalled on the grid. This year, it was a rolling start that gave drivers issues as they battled for position into turn one.

Outside polesitter Scott Dixon made contact with Helio Castroneves, who was on his inside as they went into the braking zone at the end of the front stretch.  Behind them, Jack Hawksworth and Josef Newgarden went around when Newgarden tapped Stefano Coletti, causing James Hinchcliffe to get into the back of the No. 21.

Dixon and others pitted to replace front and even rear wings. Both Newgarden and Hawksworth needed assistance in getting re-fired, but also rejoined the race.

Dixon and Newgarden fell off the lead lap before the restart, which went off without issue.
