Justin qualifies 9th for Honda Indy Edmonton
Justin and Dreyer & Reinbold Racing had to settle for 9th on the grid for Sunday's Honda Indy Edmonton after the No. 22 Z-Line Designs car narrowly missed out on a place in the Firestone Fast Six. Will Power took pole position for Team Penske (60.7126s, 116.911mph), with team-mate Helio Castroneves alongside him on the front row. Justin's team-mate, Tomas Scheckter, will line up 12th in the No. 24 MonaVie car.
In the first round of qualifying Justin found himself in Group 1, nicknamed the "group of death" by paddock wags because it featured all three Penskes, Dario Franchitti (Chip Ganassi Racing), Justin and a couple of racy wildcards like KV Racing's Takuma Sato. With that level of competition, Justin joined the other front-runners in bolting on a set of the softer, red-sidewalled Firestones and progressed to round two with the 5th fastest time (61.7594s).
In the second round, the addition of Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing), EJ Viso (KV Racing), Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport) and the impressive Simona de Silvestro (HVM Racing) from Group 2 ratcheted up the competition level still further. Justin's quickest time was a 61.5887s (115.326mph), but while the car felt good it was one and a half tenths off the pace needed for a place in the Firestone Fast Six.
"The Z-Line Designs car was quick and I'd have thought I was running in P2 if the crew hadn't told me my lap times and position," said Justin. "I lost a bit of rear grip on my final two laps and unfortunately we missed the Firestone Fast Six by a couple of tenths. I think we have a good race car for tomorrow and we'll go over the data tonight and work out a game plan for the race. I'm looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully we can pick up positions throughout the race."
For those in the UK, Sky Sports 4 will also have live coverage from 10.30pm BST.
