Panther's Delphi National Guard Honda Quick, Team Set For Saturday Qualifications
DETROIT, Mich. (August 29, 2008) -- Delphi National Guard driver Vitor Meira finished third overall on Friday's speed chart in the first day of practice for Sunday's Detroit Indy Grand Prix. Meira, who has jumped an astounding seven places in the IndyCar Series championship standings in the last five races, is now set for Saturday afternoon's qualifications.
Vitor posted a top speed of 100.728 mph, which consisted of a time of 1:13.9816 seconds on the Raceway at Belle Isle's 14-turn, 2.07-mile temporary street course. Panther recorded a Top Five finish here last year with former driver Kosuke Matsuura. Meira finished 15th here after a crash in the first turn during a restart early in the event.
Meira currently ranks 11th in the IndyCar points standings and has collected seven Top Ten and two Top Five finishes. He qualified 10th at Belle Isle last year.
Detroit Indy Grand Prix, which is held at the Raceway at Belle Isle, will be broadcast live Sunday on ABC at 3:30 p.m. (ET) with additional coverage provided by the IMS Radio Network and XM Satellite Radio channels 144 and 145.
Vitor Meira, No. 4 Delphi National Guard:
"It was another solid day for us here in Detroit today. The Delphi National Guard car was pretty good out of the box and we only had to wait on the track during the morning practice to start fine tuning it to where we wanted. Our second practice was very strong and the top three result today shows that we are in good shape for qualifying tomorrow. The entire team has been on a roll for over a month now, and we're looking to make up as many positions as possible in the championship"
